Christopher Curtis: A Legacy of Timeless Sculpture
Known for his contemporary work in stone and metal, Curtis has been creating sculptures inspired by the natural world for more than fifty years.
Inspiration
“Nature fuels my imagination. My lifelong interest in geology and astronomy, informs everything I create. I continually contemplate the earth and sky, and this is manifested in my art.”
Creating in Stone
“I’ve been fascinated by stone since I was a very young child. The search for the perfect boulder is never-ending. Often, I’ll hold onto a rock for years, before it reveals an idea for the sculpture hidden within.”
Exploration in Metal
“I often fuse stone and metal, exploring the tension between natural and industrial, ancient and modern. Lately, I’ve been focused on large stainless and Corten steel works.”
My Studio: An Ideation Zone
“My Duxbury, VT studio is carefully aligned with my aesthetic. It is in a restored historic mill nestled beside a cascading waterfall. I call it my ‘ideation zone’ because it offers a contemplative, inspiring environment for creating.”
Design and Construction
“My studio combines traditional and modern tools, including a wood shop, metalworking and welding stations, as well as computers, a 3-D printer, and virtual-reality technology that allows clients to visualize sculptures to scale before final construction.”

Five-state Touring Exhibit of “That Place in the Stars”A touring exhibit in collaboration with seven sponsors that showcased “That Place in the Stars” in Spring 2022. The touring exhibit traveled more than 1,500 miles appearing in public spaces over several weeks across Vermont, New York, Ohio, Missouri, and Oklahoma.
