A granite boulder stands upright on a polished and cut granite base. The natural shape of the boulder is elevated by the formal design of the base in a manner that both brings contrast to man-made versus natural forms but also asks the viewer to contemplate or privilege nature's work. A prism is cut into the boulder. Curtis uses holes in stone as a means of creating a lens, but depending on the position of the viewer the lens reveals less or more, allowing the viewer to gain multiple viewpoints. Curtis achieved this by creating two abstract figures engaged in conversation, vague enough to invite interpretation, but explicit enough to be decodable by viewers. "Audeamus" is a Latin word meaning "we dare, may we venture, may we risk." The sculpture is located on the newly named Finney Quad, a collection of buildings on the northeast corner of Maple and South Willard Streets in Burlington, Vermont. The naming of the Quad and the sculpture is in honor of former Champlain College President David F. Frame for the Worldis a significant sculpture realizing a number of themes in Curtis's practice. Curtis acquired the stone from a road crew while driving around one day. "I had this stone for quite a while before I dared to cut it," he said. "I knew it was going to be an upright piece. I cut the base off, but I still couldn't bring myself to have the courage to cut it further. I had it for quite a while with just the bottom cut off." The exaltation of the boulder speaks to Curtis's practice of elevating stones. "You raise it up on a base like this and you're presenting it as a more precious-than-normal object," he said. The intervention of the stone, cutting a hole into it, shows man's mark in the natural world. The polished surface of the square hole creates an opportunity for the viewer to experience the incredible texture of the boulder. Again, this void in the stone makes the pathway for the viewer to not only look at it, but through it and into it. The negative space allows the viewer to experience the world on the other side through its lens. And finally, the bench created by the remnant encourages the viewer to sit, to rest, to ponder. "When they smash atoms, they talk about the resultant particles as daughter particles," said Curtis. "I think of this two part sculpture in that way. "There was this portion of sidewalk in Stowe that was aching to be built. No one was paying attention to it and I kept haranguing as many people as I could about the need for it," explained Curtis. When asked to participate in the 2005 EXPOSED sculpture festival, he saw an opportunity. He installed the sculpture near the sidewalk. "If you looked through this device, you saw where the sidewalk ought to be. It was meant to focus attention on the need for the sidewalk and it worked. "When kids like a sculpture, it pleases me," said Curtis. "Their experience doesn't go through the normal filters that art frequently does. Exit Strategy, the kids just love. They can wander through it and climb on it. If you went inside it and laid down in there, it had an interesting acoustical property that made you feel strange.
